I’m wondering, by your definition does fan fiction extend to written work on real people by fans, or is it only work with pre-existing characters written by fans that is considered fan fiction?

I think that is a really interesting example! A post-modern fanfiction would be one that knows its a fanfiction by inserting real people into it. Or are you talking about when real people get inserted in a fictional story? In the last few books of the Dark Tower, Stephen King inserts himself in the text, but it isn’t to talk about how the story isn’t real, he is just there. Honestly, I would call that a fanfiction.
