Hi! So I just have a couple questions about the class structure and a few questions about the lectures:

    Class-
What kind of topics can we write the optional final paper on?
What parts of the readings should we be focusing on? For the last reading, I was not sure if we should read the whole pdf or just a chapter of it.
Also, can our podcast conversation be about anything in the class? Or a specific topic?

    Lecture-
I thought the “Death of the Author” video and the “Fanfiction Reader” article was very insightful. I liked how Coppa described the fanfiction world as gift giving because it was so collaborative and all the writings are free. This made me wonder about the main purpose of fanfiction: is it for aspiring writers to test out their books and ideas or for a group of individuals who are interested in the characters and the fictional world? I guess what I am trying to ask is fanfiction a group of authors or a modern book club?

I also wanted to ask about the podcast project. I know that we were supposed to sign up for a date, which I did, but I wasn’t sure what potential topics we could pick. Is it any topic about fanfiction writing, digital composition?

    Hi Annette,

Let me try to answer your questions one by one.

What kind of topics can we write the optional final paper on?
Anything related to multimodal composition and fanfiction. If you look at the prompt in the course requirements, you will see that you will need to meet with me to discuss a topic before you propose one. Please sign up for an office hour or email me a time when we can discuss further.

What parts of the readings should we be focusing on? For the last reading, I was not sure if we should read the whole pdf or just a chapter of it.

In the schedule, you will see I mention the specific part of the pdf that you should read, for last time it was ““Introduction: Five Things That Fanfiction Is, And One Thing It Isn’t” Sometimes I can only get the whole book in PDF form, but you do not need to read the whole thing.

Also, can our podcast conversation be about anything in the class? Or a specific topic?

It usually works better to have a specific topic in mind. As you can see in the Podcast page, I just want to give you a space to talk about what is interesting you in fanfiction to help you think about what your video project is going to be on.

-I love this analysis. I think that in the age of the internet, where we are all creators of media. Fanfiction looks to be the future of consumption. Where it is not a passive act, but an active one.

Anything relating to those topics! Please email me with what you are thinking about and we can take it from there.
