Some of the main works we have looked at so far and their subsequent “fanfictions” include the Black Panther franchise and the Watchmen franchise. Both were originally comics that were added to, adapted, and remediated.

With the Black Panther franchise, the Marvel comics came first. Coates created his Black Panther comic which looked at Wakanda in a light that wasn’t explored in the Black Panther movie. Coates looked at the social structure and political atmosphere of Wakanda, while the movie focused on power structure: the rise, fall, and return of the king of Wakanda, T’Challa. Both the comic and movie are considered (in my opinion) powerful adaptations of the original comics, bringing in new perspectives.

With the Watchmen franchise, we looked at the comic, TV show, and movie. The comic and movie have a similar premise, with the Comedian being killed. However, where they continue on from the premise varies greatly. In the comics, the Watchmen are divided, but in the movie, they are more united. The TV show, however, brings a completely new twist to the franchise, with a new setting and new characters. The basis of the story is in the Watchmen universe, but it explores new themes of racism and white supremacy. The movie and TV show are starkly different adaptations of the comic.

Though both franchises have similarities in the way their subsequent adaptations played out (e.g. some adaptations have the same characters), they are also different. Coates’ Black Panther comic takes place after the events of the movie and other comics and continues to tell the story of Wakanda. The Watchmen movie brings the characters into a new, more modern setting but tells a similar story to the comic. All the “fanfictions” we have looked at aren’t really fanfictions at all in my opinion, but powerful and creative adaptations that breathe new life into the stories and universes they exist in.
