The way I understand copyright in relation to fanfiction is that creators of the original work (authors, filmmakers, comic book writers) are the only people who can sell their work and make a profit off of it, unless they sell the rights to another party. So essentially copyright laws are only violated if the fanfiction creator attempts to sell their fanfiction and make money off of the work. However, I think that if a property has been out for long enough or the content creator gives up the rights, the property can be public domain, which is why fairytale adaptations are able to be told but Disney characters such as Elsa from Frozen or Tarzan aren’t able to be used. This happens a lot with youtubers when they review movies and use footage from the films. They are slapped with copyright claims and have to take the videos down as the content creators claim that because youtubers make their money from these videos and the clips are in the videos they are violating copyright laws.

So you can’t use any copyrighted material for any purpose other than what the owner intends?
