Prompt: Find a short fan fiction (or just a portion of a longer one) and talk about what it changes about the source text.

This fanfiction describes an encounter between two playable characters, a viking berserker and Japanese shinobi, in the game For Honor. Within this story, these two opponents meet on the battlefield as they fight for their lives. While this may appear to follow the original works, this fanfiction immediately changes the narrative when the duel becomes an “erotic encounter.” While dueling, the berserker is overcome, and collapses with the shinobi on top of him. From here, the shinobi doesn’t strike the berserker but rather begins to romantically taunt the berserker, hoping they would meet again.

Clearly, this fanfiction alters the original works of For Honor. This is done so by eliminating the “ending” of each game/match. Rather then the shinobi killing her opponent, she begins to flirt with the berserker – leading both opponents to hope for another romantic/erotic interaction after their first encounter.

You could also mention that this is an example of “Death of the Author.” This is because the stories that For Honor brought are released to audiences, where the input of the author is now neglected, with the stories, characters, and environments being “public domain” for fans. Here, the audiences use these resources to create new stories, relationships, and events despite the author’s intent.

    Excellent Example Alan!

What do you think when author and audiences interact? One old example of this is https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Life_and_Opinions_of_Tristram_Shandy,_Gentleman

It was published in serial form and in-between each issue, the author, Sterne, used reader feedback to change the story to the liking of the audience.
