What I think is difficult about navigating IP is what you can use and when you can use it. Copyright has changed over the years. When I was a kid, it was okay to record movies off of the TV on VHS tapes as long as it was for home viewing, but over the years people started getting in trouble for that. What was considered permissible changed without telling anyone. People changed. I understand not wanting your art to be misused and to want to be compensated for your hard work, but banning private in-home viewing of recorded material seems extreme. Maybe someone should publish a guide so lay people will know what they can and cannot do with copyrighted material, or have an up to date blog or social media page to help people.

The problem is companies are always trying to change things. You mention the recording because you used to be able to own a movie or an album when you bought it. But now music and movies are licensed rather than sold, which limits your ability to do as you please with them.
