Shepard Fairley was a famous street artist who drew a famous portrait of Obama which became very monumental in his 2008 Presidential campaign, even though it was never official. A freelancer named Mannie Garcia from the Associated Press demanded compensation because the portrait was loosely based on a picture that she took. It could be argued that the picture would not have risen to the fame that it did without the artwork by Fairley. Eventually, Associated Press and Fairley came to a settlement in which both parties would split the profits of the work. This case was significant because it is necessary for all derivative works to give credit to the original photographer or writer of the work.
