The comics function as the primary text. Alan Moore wrote the original Watchmen comics in the 1980s, decades before the movie and HBO series were produced.

The “Watchmen” movie is a form of adaptation, as it is essentially a cinematic reconstruction of the original comics. The “Watchmen” storyline adapts to fit this medium, yet still embraces a majority of its original content. It is also important to note the movie is produced by Marvel Comics. Marvel Comics owns copyright protections over the original work, therefore, the movie was not subject to typical copyright limitations and could legally produce an adaptation of the original work.

“The Watchmen” (TV series) is a form of fanfiction. Damon Lindelof, the creator of the “Watchmen” HBO series, views the show as a “remix” of the original comics. Lindelof’s “Watchmen” takes place 34 years after the events of the comic series, placing the original comic’s vigilantes in modern-day. The show is produced by DC Entertainment and Warner Bros. Television, both of which are major competitors of Marvel Comics. “Watchmen” (TV series) is an independently created work telling a remixed version of the original comic; therefore, it is fanfiction.
